My New Favorite Burger in Taiwan+I’m Officially Middle-Aged
Yeah, it’s my birthday and I’m officially in the next “demographic”.
On a more positive note, today I discovered a new “favorite hamburger” in Taiwan. It’s the Mofo Burger at California Grill, which sits in the alley next to the high-end Sogo on Dun Hua South Road. Being a Los Angelino I really don’t have high expectations for any restaurant that offers “California food”. “California” is one of those words that gets randomly put into the titles, logos, and names of things simply because it’s considered to be a “fashionable” place (like Paris, New York, etc…). Is the food here “California” food? Not really. It’s more “American” food with some variation. But it’s good. On that note, lets move on to their signature burger, the Mofo.
Not only was it great, but it was uniquely great. What I mean by that is that the Mojo burger’s ingredients give it a taste all its own. It’s only 1/3 pound of USDA beef, but size isn’t what makes a good hamburger and quite honestly I balk at anyone who tells me any food is good because it’s “big”. On top of the burger sits cheddar (okay, cheddar is a Cali thing), bacon, BBQ sauce, lettuce, tomato, onions, and a garlic mayonnaise. I ordered mine without the onions. It all blends together extremely well and the garlic mayo is an especially good balance to the barbecue sauce.
California Grill also has any number of other beef, chicken, and tofu burgers and and the prices are very reasonable with a burger, fries, and tea being only NT$155. If you’re in the Taipei area it’s definitely worth checking out.
They are located on Tunhua South Road, Section 1, Lane 238 right next to the upscale Sogo Tiffany’s. It’s a small joint, so try and go early or call ahead to see if there’s room. Their number is (2) 8771-9423. If you are taking the MRT, get off at the Chungxiao-Fushing station. It’s a 5 minute walk from there.
This coming Sunday I’m meeting up with some other expat photo-enthusiasts at Forkers on Chungxiao, known for its hamburgers. So let’s see if the Mofo burger will still be held in such high esteem next week.

If your “demographic” comment means what I think it means, you’re only a little older than I am.
